The Applied stage is where all new candidates land when they submit an application to your job. This stage has been redesigned to help you quickly understand who needs your attention, what documents have been submitted, and what decision you need to make — without the clutter of the previous design.
In this article, we will cover:
- Applied Stage Overview
- Key Features
- Reviewing and Taking Action on Candidates
- Declining a Candidate
- Advancing a Candidate

Applied Stage Overview
The previous layout showed star ratings, comments, tags, advance/decline buttons, and document statuses all on a single screen for each candidate, which was overwhelming. The new design focuses on what matters most: who's new, what documents are available, and what decision you need to make.
Key Features
Candidate Count
See how many candidates are in the Applied stage at a glance, displayed right in the stage header, so you always know the volume waiting for review.
New Badge
Candidates who haven't been reviewed yet are marked with a "New" tag so you know exactly who needs attention first. Once you open a candidate's record, the badge is removed.
Star
Flag standout candidates with a star to easily find them again or signal them to your hiring team.
Document Indicators
Quickly see which documents each candidate has submitted — including required documents and any optional documents they've uploaded — and whether any are still pending. This lets you prioritize candidates who have submitted complete packages.
Pre-Screen Scores
If a candidate has completed a pre-screen survey, their score displays directly in the list. You can also sort the Applied list by highest pre-screen score to surface your strongest candidates first.
Filter Options
Use the filter to narrow your view of the Applied list:
- All Candidates – see everyone who has applied
- New – see only candidates you haven't reviewed yet
- Awaiting Decision – see only candidates waiting to be declined or advanced to In Progress
- Failed Survey- see candidates who received a 0% on the prescreen survey, not meeting a basic qualification.
- Starred- review only candidates you starred
Reviewing and Taking Action on Candidates
To review a candidate's documents, you can either click directly on a specific document indicator or click on the candidate's name to open the Candidate Drawer.
From the drawer, you can:
- Review all submitted documents (resume, application, survey responses)
- Review past applications the candidate has submitted to your business
- See tags, comments, and recent activity
- Decline the candidate with a disposition code and optional rejection email
- Advance the candidate to In Progress
- Navigate between candidates using the arrow buttons without closing the drawer
Declining a Candidate
When you decline a candidate, you will be prompted to select a disposition code — the reason you are not moving forward. You can also choose to send a rejection email at this time. Rejection emails can be sent immediately or in bulk from the Declined tab later.
Advancing a Candidate
Clicking Move to In Progress, as seen above, moves the candidate out of Applied and into your active hiring steps. Once moved, they will appear in the In Progress stage column view. You can also select the specific hiring step you would like to move a candidate to by selecting the drop-down and stage.
