When you open a new job in Hireology, it automatically goes out to organic job boards. Organic visibility means your job is ranked by relevance or how recently it was posted. As new jobs are added, your posting will naturally fall further down in search results over time.
While sponsoring a job can be a great way to boost its visibility, you should first ensure the job posting itself is high quality. A well-written, clear, and compelling job description is the most effective way to attract great talent, regardless of whether you're paying to promote it.
In this article we will cover:
Optimizing Your Job Posting
Before you consider sponsorship, take a moment to review and optimize your job posting.
- Focus on Quality First: Job boards use quality guidelines to ensure a good experience for job seekers, and following these guidelines will help your job get picked up across many different sites. Here’s what you should focus on to create a high-quality, high-visibility job post:
- Offer a Real Job: Make sure your posting is for a genuine, available position. Avoid content that looks like a scam, spam, or is overly promotional.
- Create a Clear and Concise Job Title: The job title should be the name of the position as it would appear on a business card. Avoid extra information, such as "hiring now," "bonus," or location details. For example, instead of "Part-time CNA Certified Nursing Assistant NEEDED in Chicago - $200 Bonus!!!", use "Certified Nursing Assistant."
- Write an Effective Job Description: This is where you can provide all the details about the job. Include a company overview, a list of day-to-day responsibilities, qualifications, and benefits. A good job description should have multiple sentences and give a clear picture of the role. Avoid simply listing keywords.
- Disclose Compensation Information: Many job seekers look for this information, and some states are beginning to mandate its disclosure. Providing a salary range can increase a job's visibility and attract more qualified candidates. We always recommend including compensation information in the ‘Job Details’ section when creating a job, however you might also consider including this information in the job description as well.
- Use a Specific, Accurate Location: Your posting should list the actual city where the job is located. Do not post the same job in multiple cities to try and gain more visibility, as this can get your posting flagged as spam.
- Avoid General Recruitment Language: Write your posting as though you're hiring for a single role, even if you plan to hire multiple people. For example, use "Caregiver" instead of "Caregivers." In the case where you have multiple openings available for the same role, note the number of ‘Seats’ available in the Job Details section and consider adding “multiple openings available’ to your description.
When to Consider Sponsorship
After you've optimized your job posting, you may decide to sponsor it to get a boost in visibility.
Sponsorship is most effective when:
- Your job has seen a significant drop in organic traffic. As your job posting ages, its visibility will naturally decline. Sponsoring it can bring it back to the top of search results.
- You've built a high-quality job posting but are not seeing the applicant volume you need. If you've done everything right on the organic side, sponsoring the job can help you reach a wider audience and bring in more applications.
- You're hiring for a hard-to-fill role or a highly competitive market. In these situations, a sponsored post can give you a crucial advantage over other employers.
By creating a strong, compelling job post first, you can get the most out of your sponsorship budget and attract the best possible candidates.
